What Growth Asks of a Leader
LEADERS & GROWTH
There was an adage we used often in my Mary Kay years:
The team that gets you to one level won’t necessarily be the team that gets you to the next.
I watched that play out over and over.
My sales unit became a Rookie of the Year unit, then a $450,000 Unit Club, a Pink Cadillac unit, and eventually the #1 unit in our National Area.
And looking back now, I would add something else:
The version of me who got us to one level wasn’t always the leader who could take us to the next one either.
This is one of those teams — and one of those chapters of my own leadership journey.
This is one of those teams — and one of those chapters of my own leadership journey.
That’s the thing about growing. The thing that makes you successful at one stage can actually become the thing that constrains the next. It can be frustrating and maddening all at the same time.
Being deeply involved can create momentum. Until everything needs you.
Flexibility can build trust. Until people need greater clarity.
Knowing how to jump in and solve the problem can be invaluable. Until the organization needs more people capable of solving it without you.
This is often where my work with CEOs and leadership teams begins.
Not with, What’s wrong with my people? Where can we IMPROVE??
But with:
What does the business need from its leaders now?
And equally important:
What does this next stage require from you?
Many of you know, I’ve always been drawn to what could be — in a person, a team, an organization — and to creating the conditions for more of it to come alive. It's my Maximizer and Futuristic strengths firing on all cylinders.
That is becoming an increasingly important part of how I think about leadership development: not training sitting beside the real work, but development embedded within it. In the decisions, conversations, expectations and relationships where leadership actually happens.
A few questions to sit with as you enter Q4:
What worked beautifully at an earlier stage of your organization or business, but may be limiting it now?
Where does your leadership team need to grow to carry what’s next?
Where do you need to grow alongside them?
Who does this next version of the organization need you to become?
Some things to think about...as you grow.
Love and Belief,
Lori
